Sega Becomes First Publisher To Top Metacritic’s Annual Rankings Three Times

Metacritic’s annual rankings are here, where game publishers are ranked according to their average Metascore for games released in the past year. It’s the 15th year that Metacritic have made their ranking, and a record has been broken by publisher Sega. As they top out the 2024 Game Publisher ranking list, Sega has made history and is now the first publisher to score #1 on the year-end list three times!

Sega’s average Metascore this year was 82.9, placing it above the second place Capcom at 82.1, who just so happen to be last year’s winner. Sega’s victory was secured thanks to the incredible Metaphor: ReFantazio (our own game of the year!), along with Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance and Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth also scoring in the 90s to pull up the average score. Their worst reviewed title of the last year was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Sweep the Board!, and even that still got a 71.

The huge success of Metaphor: ReFantazio pulled Sega through to first place for 2024, thanks to its 94 Metascore.

Sega last topped the list in 2021, and then even further back in 2016. Capcom has taken first place twice, along with Take-Two Interactive, Microsoft and Electronic Arts. Out of them all though, Sega took the win, and we’re excited to see how they perform this year too. They may just be facing off against Capcom once again, as the recent Monster Hunter Wilds has been breaking records and is a Metacritic Must-Play.
