It has only been a few days since we reported on Sony showing confidence in Bungie’s extraction-shooter Marathon, currently going through a troubled development cycle. Despite confirmed plagiarism accusations and middling feedback on alpha gameplay, Sony reassured Marathon will meet its release year target. Now however, Bungie just confirmed that Marathon will be delayed indefinitely beyond its scheduled Sept. 23 release date.
In a statement released on their official blog, Bungie say they made the decision to delay the game to an unspecified time in the future to “empower the team” which is reported to have low morale in the wake of Marathon‘s numerous scandals. This will also come with “immediate focus areas” on changing the gameplay for closed testing with select alpha testers, including a stronger narrative, more social experiences, and more rewarding and “tense” gameplay combat encounters.
Even though no release window has been confirmed, Sony did pledge just days ago that Marathon would release this fiscal year, meaning during or before March 2026. Bungie say we’ll hear more from them later in the year, with an update this fall on the progress Marathon makes over the summer and with a new release date for the game. We’ll be sure to provide updates as they come.
