“Destiny 2: The Final Shape” Reportedly Delayed Till June 2024

Bloomberg is reporting today that Bungie is delaying their next major expansion to live-service shooter Destiny 2 until June of next year.  This move comes as Bungie is also executing a layoff of an unspecified number of staff.  Jason Schreier, at Bloomberg, received word from sources who were not authorized to speak publicly that an email from Bungie CEO Pete Parsons was sent to Bungie employees saying they would be “hearing some news today.”  A number of individuals on Twitter have posted the confirmation that they have been laid off.  Neither Sony nor Bungie has made any official comment about the number of affected employees.

According to the Bloomberg piece, The Final Shape (which was originally scheduled for February 2024) is being pushed back to June.  Meanwhile, Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter Marathon is being delayed until 2025.  No specific reason has been given for the delays, and there has been no confirmation from Bungie or Sony regarding any such delays.  As of the time of this writing, Sony’s PlayStation Store listing for The Final Shape is still showing a release date of February 27, 2024.  Logistically, such a delay would create a significant gap in Destiny 2‘s current seasonal format, creating a sort of “lost season” (not to be confused with the “Season of The Lost” which Bungie released earlier) without any content outside of the seasonal Guardian Games and Solstice events.

We will update this story as new information becomes available.
