Doom: The Dark Ages Sets Early And Confident Review Embargo

The review embargo date has been revealed for id Software’s upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages, and it’s an uncharacteristically confident one from publisher Bethesda. Thanks to a post by journalist Jordan Middler, we now know that reviews for Doom: The Dark Ages will release on May 9 at 7 AM PT – that’s 10 AM ET, 3 PM BST and 4 PM CEST. That’s almost an entire week before the game’s official release date of May 15, although it will be playable from May 13 for those who pre-order for early access.

This is a surprising embargo date for Doom: The Dark Ages, as publisher Bethesda are infamous for setting embargo dates mere days before a game launches. The review embargo for Starfield was only a few hours before early access of the game dropped, giving players barely any time to process the reviews. The fact that id Software’s Doom: The Dark Ages is being given so much longer for reviews to release before launch shows confidence from the company that critics are going to have some good things to say, and hype will build up in the days between the embargo and the game’s full release.

For those unaware, Doom: The Dark Ages is the third installment in the modern Doom series, and serves as a prequel to 2016’s Doom. The combat is set to be heavier in a medieval-inspired world, compared to past entries that are about lighter, faster shooting. Doom: The Dark Ages released on May 15, or May 13 for those who pre-order, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
