Famitsu: Kirby Goes Mouthful Mode, While PS5 Continues Domination

Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers Feb. 20 – 26, and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe has inhaled the competition for top spot. Debuting with 189,000 sales, Kirby sits far above this week’s second place spot which was taken by Octopath Traveler II. The chart also covers some other big debuts, such as Like A Dragon: Ishin! and Ark: Survival Evolved on Switch.

The launch of Octopath Traveler II has been slightly lesser than its first title back in 2018. The original Octopath Traveler sold over 109,000 units at launch on the Switch, compared to Octopath Traveler II selling just shy of 54,000 copies on the Switch, and an additional 14,000 units on the PlayStation 5. This split could be attributed to a variety of things. The digital market has been growing over the years, so five years on from the original launch, perhaps more Japanese gamers chose to purchase the game digitally. Additionally, the first Octopath Traveler launched as a Switch exclusive, whilst the sequel is available on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Octopath Traveler II takes two spots on this week’s chart, but falls below its predecessor.

Over on the hardware chart, the PS5 continues to sell huge numbers, outselling the Switch for its fifth week in a row. Combining editions, the PS5 sold more than 91,000 consoles last week in Japan, compared to the Switch’s 61,000 consoles. Sony promised that supply issues would be resolved heading into 2023, and it seems they were right. Pent up demand has finally been met with supply, and PS5s are flying off the shelves.
