Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers March 3 – 9, as Monster Hunter Wilds held strong at first place following its gigantic launch. Selling an additional 101,000 units this week, the latest record-breaking entry in the Monster Hunter franchise has now crossed 700,000 physical units sold.
Sales for Monster Hunter Wilds tell a deceiving story if we only look at physical copies. Wilds launched far lower than its former World, but Capcom’s official figures including digital copies show that Monster Hunter Wilds is Capcom’s fastest-selling game ever from any franchise. It appears many more players have opted to go digital this time around. The drop-off rate from week to week of Monster Hunter Wilds is exactly the same as Monster Hunter World back in 2018, with both dropping 83% in sales during their second week. This is a good sign that there’s no drop of interest in the franchise at all locally in Japan; it’s just a shift to digital sales.
