Famitsu Sales: Monster Hunter Wilds Has Biggest PS5 Launch In Japan

Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers Feb. 24 – March 2, as the legendary Monster Hunter Wilds made its debut. After releasing on Feb. 28 so experiencing just three days of tracking, the game sold 601,000 units on PS5. This is an incredibly impressive feat – especially for a PS5 title.

We already know Monster Hunter Wilds is a big hit, the biggest in fact, considering it broke all-time Capcom sales records. Its PS5 launch is nothing short of gigantic, becoming the biggest PS5 launch yet in Japan on the Famitsu charts. It towers above Final Fantasy XVI which sold 336,000 copies at launch, which itself sold more than Final Fantasy VII Rebirth‘s launch with 263,000 sales.

This being said, the number of physical copies purchased for the game is drastically lower than other titles in the series, as players around the world go digital. The 2021 Switch-exclusive release of Monster Hunter Rise sold 1.3 million units physically in its first week, whilst going further back to 2018 shows the massive Monster Hunter World release to 1.35 million sales on PS4. That’s a 55% drop in physical sales between World and Wilds
