Final Fantasy VII Has Sold Over 15 Million Copies Worldwide

We just had the Xbox Showcase event, where Square Enix revealed that their Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XVI will finally be coming to Xbox platforms. At the bottom of this announcement from Square Enix’s press office is an interesting new update that’s easily missed though, which is the announcement that the original Final Fantasy VII has now sold over 15.1 million copies worldwide.

The 1997 classic is one of the most influential games in the RPG genre, and was responsible for catapulting Final Fantasy‘s success in the Western market, along with the PlayStation as a console. The last update on sales for Final Fantasy VII was all the way back in November 2023, where it was confirmed to have sold 14.4 million units globally. This means in less than two years, the original Final Fantasy VII sold an additional 700,000 copies.

The massive success of Final Fantasy VII birthed an entire franchise around it.

The whirlwind success of Final Fantasy VII made it a franchise in its own right, with spin-offs, remasters and an entire remake trilogy that’s currently approaching its third and final entry. With such a huge audience, Final Fantasy VII is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. The remake trilogy has also been a success, and is branching out onto Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles after being limited to PlayStation and PC for the last few years.

Have you played the original Final Fantasy VII, and how many of those 15 million copies sold globally are you responsible for? I’m at least three of them! Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below, and keep your eyes on GameLuster for more gaming news and Final Fantasy updates.
