Today was the 42nd Golden Joystick Awards, the oldest video game awards night after it started way back in 1983. Not only is the show the longest running, but it’s also publicly-voted since day one when voting slips were submitted through the mail, now being online. 24 awards were given out over the course of the night, with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Helldivers 2 being the most awarded games, tied with four awards each.
The awards won by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth include Best Storytelling, Best Soundtrack, Best Lead Performer for Cody Christian as Cloud Strife, and Best Supporting Performer for Briana White as Aerith Gainsborough. The award for Best Soundtrack is a particularly satisfying accolade, after the Grammy Awards recently snubbed the soundtrack for the latest in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.
As for Helldivers 2, it scooped up the award for Best Multiplayer Game, Console Game of the Year, Critics’ Choice Award and Best Game Trailer thanks to its ‘The Fight for Freedom Begins’ launch trailer. Whilst both Helldivers and Final Fantasy won big, the most coveted award for Ultimate Game of the Year went to Black Myth: Wukong.
