New information for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released today during a Nintendo Direct presentation.
During the Nintendo Direct, three new characters were revealed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Ken from the Street Fighter series will be making his way into the title as an echo character for Ryu. While similar, Ken will be slightly faster and has a slightly different move set. Also announced was Incineroar, the final evolution of Litten from Pokémon Sun and Moon. Incineroar will use a number of pro-wrestling moves on his opponents. Finally, the Piranha Plant has been announced as an early-purchase bonus. Those who purchase the game by Jan. 31 will receive this fighter when it releases in February 2019 for free.
Along with the announcement of the new fighters, it was also announced that there will be DLC content in the form of new fighters, stages, and music. Each pack of DLC will come with a new fighter, a new stage, and music tracks. Each pack will cost $5.99. There will be a Fighter’s Pass for $24.99, which will include all five of the fighter packs and save you $5. Those who purchase the pass will also receive a costume based off Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
There will be a new feature in Ultimate called Spirits Mode. In this mode, a ton of characters from a variety of franchises have been made into spirits. Players will be able to equip a number of these spirits on their characters and gain power-ups depending on which spirits were equipped. There will be a massive number of spirits to equip, ranging from characters such as Dr. Wily (from Mega Man) to Revolver Ocelot (from Metal Gear Solid). Players can equip a primary spirit, to which secondary spirits can be attached. Mixing and matching these spirits will help players gain the upper hand on their opponents. The reveal of Spirits Mode shows that an old fan theory wasn’t too far off the nose about the name of the hidden mode.
A new story mode for Ultimate was also revealed. Entitled World of Light, this mode will explain how the spirits in the Spirits Mode came to be. In the trailer for the mode, we see all of the game’s characters get captured by a mysterious force, all except for Kirby. Kirby then sets off on an adventure to rescue the other fighters during this campaign.
Finally, new Amiibo have been announced. Amiibo for Ridley, Wolf, and the Inklings will release for the game on launch. Then, Amiibo for King K. Rool, the Ice Climbers, and the Piranha Plant will release on Feb. 15, 2019. Sometime in 2019, Amiibo for Ken, Isabelle, Pichu, Young Link, and Daisy will be released. It was also mentioned that Amiibo for every fighter will be released, suggesting we should see Amiibo figures for Incineroar, Simon Belmont, and Richter as well, the latter two having been revealed during a previous Nintendo Direct.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will release on the Nintendo Switch on Dec. 7.
With all the characters revealed, it seems our predictions back in June were about 60 percent correct. What do you think of the new modes and fighters that have been revealed? Let us know in the comments below.
