The nominations for the 2020 Game Awards have officially been announced. Public voting is now open via the Game Awards website. The event itself, which is produced by Geoff Keighley, will occur on December 10, 2020.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Game Awards will be an all-digital event which can be watched online. The event will be broadcast from three stages located in Los Angeles, London and Tokyo. It will feature performances by the London Philharmonic Orchestra as well as other announcements and appearances which have not yet been announced.
The six games nominated for the prestigious Game of the Year award are:
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo)
- Doom Eternal (ID Software / Bethesda)
- Final Fantasy VII Remake (Square Enix)
- Ghost of Tsushima (Sucker Punch / SIE)
- Hades (Supergiant Games)
- The Last of Us Part II (Naughty Dog / SIE)
Other categories include Best Narrative, Best Score and Music, Best Performance, Best Indie, and a number of awards highlighting genres including fighting games, sports games, strategy games and more. There are also awards highlighting eSports athletes, coaches hosts and teams as well as gaming-related content creators.
The game receiving the most nominations was The Last of Us Part II with 10. Hades received eight nominations, Ghost of Tsushima seven, and Final Fantasy VII Remake six. Although it was not nominated for Game of the Year, Half-Life: Alyx received four nominations, as did GOTY nominee Doom Eternal, while Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Ori and the Will of the Wisps tied with three.
2020 viral hit Among Us received a nod in the form of Best Mobile Game and Best Multiplayer nominations, while fellow viral phenomenon Phasmophobia was acknowledged with a nom for Best Debut Game. Best Indie looks to be a tight race this year, with Hades going up against Spelunky 2, Spiritfarer, Carrion, and streaming favorite Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.
Many of the year’s biggest titles were released in November, possibly due to delays caused by COVID-19. The late release of these titles may account for the minimal nominations received by Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Watch Dogs Legion, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
More information and updates will be released via the official Game Awards Twitter account as the event draws nearer.
