God Of War Ragnarök Sells 5.1 Million Copies In Debut Week

It’s official, God of War Ragnarök has become the fastest-selling PlayStation first party game in history. This news may not come as much surprise for some, given that Santa Monica Studio’s hit sequel to 2018’s God of War was received so well by critics and fans alike. We also already learned the physical sales for God of War Ragnarök recently trumped Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II in the UK, as previously reported by GameLuster.

The news was announced via PlayStation’s official Twitter account, confirming that God of War: Ragnarök had sold a staggering 5.1 million copies within its debut week. This makes the sequel the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive in just one week, and right now, it’s difficult to imagine any other title stealing the crown from Santa Monica Studio any time soon. It’s worth remembering the game benefited from bundling with PlayStation 5 consoles, but the numbers are no less impressive.

God of War Ragnarök also sold more copies on launch day than any previous God of War game sold within the first week. The hype and anticipation for the game was huge, and these stats reaffirm just how popular the God of War series has become with PlayStation players. Beyond Ragnarök, the path ahead for Santa Monica Studios remains unclear, with Ragnarök’s creative director Cory Barlow telling The LA Times that they were “spread out on a lot of different things.”

God of War Ragnarök released on the PS4 and PS5 on Nov. 9. Have you played God of War Ragnarök already, and if not, will you be playing the sequel any time soon? You’ve got 5.1 million other people to catch up with! Let us know in the comments below, and keep your eyes on GameLuster for more gaming news.
