Fans watching today’s Indie World Showcase video from Nintendo might have been surprised to see a quartet of familiar faces: none other than Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! The four “heroes on the half shell” return to the world of video games in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, arriving on Nintendo Switch and PC later in 2021.
Shredder’s Revenge features classic pixel graphics, designs inspired by the 1987 incarnations of the characters, and arcade-style beat ’em up gameplay reminiscent of classic titles including Turtles in Time. It is developed by Tribute Games, a Montreal-based studio known for creating titles with a retro feel such as Wizorb, Flinthook, and Panzer Paladin. Some members of the Tribute team even worked on the recently re-released Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game.
Shredder’s Revenge sees the four heroic turtles teaming up to defeat a number of classic enemies including the Foot Clan, Rocksteady, and, of course, their eternal nemesis Shredder. Each of the four Turtles has a unique play style based around their signature weapon. When they aren’t taking down enemies, the TMNT can hang out in the sewers, travel through a world designed using the classic “totally rad” Ninja Turtles aesthetic, and, of course, chow down on some pizza. Just make sure to give a loud shout of “Cowabunga” as you charge into combat to take Shredder down for good!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge will debut for the Nintendo Switch later this year. As of now, an official release date has not been announced. A PC release is also confirmed, and Tribute Games may be looking into bringing the game to other consoles as well.
