Jeff Grubb: Single-Player Black Panther Game In The Works

A new report has suggested that a single-player, open-world Black Panther game could be in development at EA’s newly-opened studio in Seattle. Jeff Grubb, speaking on Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings show, flagged the potential of a game based on the Marvel superhero, citing that the project would be called “Project Rainier.”

To put that title into context, the word ‘Rainier’ is actually inspired by Mount Rainier, an active stratovolcano in Washington State. Jeff has suggested that the placeholder title is a shout-out to the studio. Grubb provided further details on the single-player project that he says “is in very early development.”

“The game starts with Black Panther being dead, and the player is going to take on the challenges of becoming the new Black Panther, and that seems to be the set up for the game.” Grubb added. “This is an EA-published game.”

The new studio in Seattle connected to the Black Panther game was founded in 2021 by Kevin Stephens, the ex-vice president of Monolith. During his time at the company, Stephens oversaw the development of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War.

The Black Panther game, if the speculation is proven to be true, takes a different narrative direction from the MCU films. There’s no further information on the plot and casting for the game. The upcoming sequel to 2018’s Black Panther will focus heavily on the death of Chadwick Boseman and his character counterpart, T’Challa. He took on the role of Black Panther following his father’s death in Captain America: Civil War.
