In preparation for the launch of Marvel Rivals mid-season revamp, known as Season 2.5, developers NetEase just shared a new Dev Vision update that details everything new coming in the May 30 update. The massive refresh will add a new support hero with Ultron, along with a new map, new experimental chess mode named Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol, along with new customization options, team-up ability changes and more. Let’s dive into them a little!
Headlining the update is Ultron, the supervillain who is surprisingly joining the game as a Strategist, which is Marvel Rivals-speak for a support hero. He stands out as a flying, air-based healer, but still can let out some serious attacks as you’d expect from him. He’s joined by a new map, Arakko, a sister island to Krakoa that of course Ultron wants to take over. The final new Ultron-themed addition is Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol, a new auto chess mode where players build teams and place their heroes strategically, watching them fight it out from above. Who knew Ultron likes to play board games in his free time?

Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 is going to expand customization options in a few ways too. Firstly, new ‘Moods‘ will allow players to equip small chibi stickers on their nameplates to convey whatever vibe you’re into, whilst Emojis are new emote-like options that you can whip out in-game to express your feelings. Next time your ultimate gets blocked by an Emma Frost, you can unleash your rage in emoticon form. Finally, the Hero Select screen will now show your Lord icons for any heroes you have them on, avatars earned and unlocked by being proficient in individual characters.
As for the rest of the update, there will be balancing tweaks to the kit of a bunch of Marvel Rivals heroes, along with the removal of some Team-Up Abilities and the introduction of a few new ones – including Jeff-Nado, a fusion of Storm and Jeff the Land Shark’s ultimate to create a Sharknado-style storm of chaos. You’ll be able to read more on the specific hero changes when the patch notes drop with the May 30 release.
