Nintendo Comments On Switch 2 Pricing, Will Consider “Affordability Customers Expect”

Nintendo has spoken out on the pricing of its hotly anticipated Switch 2 system, and it’s vague but perhaps reassuring, depending on your interpretation. In the Q&A session that followed their latest round of financial results, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said they will “consider the affordability that our customers expect from Nintendo products”, but also said it needs to acknowledge Japan’s increasing inflation rate, and additionally the economic exchange rate changes since the Switch launched in 2017.

It’s a tricky situation for Nintendo, as the demand from consumers and interest from shareholders will surely be a tempting one to raise the price, alongside the current economic situation both inside of Japan and outside in the broader world. That being said though, as Furukawa acknowledged, people expect affordability from Nintendo products, especially considering their reputation in being somewhat behind their conventional competitors in terms of pure hardware performance.

Switch console
Nintendo hit a sweet spot with the pricing of the first Nintendo Switch, but we’re a long way from 2017.

We’ve not actually seen the Switch 2 in any noteworthy form besides its reveal, where nothing was actually said on hardware and we only see a few glimpses of an unnamed Mario Kart game running in the background. As such, it’s too soon to decide for anyone what a good price or a bad price would be, and we don’t envy Nintendo for needing to make such an impactful decision. What remains relevant though is that Nintendo is aware of what their customer base expects, and so they’re likely prepared for any potential response from that same group of consumers. We’re all excited to see more from the Switch 2, but for now the pricing of it may still leave some nervous.

What would your ideal price range for the Switch 2 be, taking into account our current lack of knowledge? Do you have a maximum amount you’d pay for the follow-up system to the Nintendo Switch? It’s good to hear Nintendo is at least acknowledging the affordability aspect, but those economic factors they mentioned are definitely concerning.
