Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Brings New Life to Insomniac’s Run ‘n Gun Franchise

As part of the recent PS5 announcement, Insomniac Games revealed that they would be bringing a new installment of their long-running Ratchet and Clank franchise exclusively to Sony’s next-gen console.

So far, not much is known about the plot of the game, but there are some things we can understand from the reveal trailer and early gameplay demo. The plot continues from the continuity of 2013’s Into the Nexus rather than the 2016 Ratchet and Clank remake, with Ratchet and Clank having to deal with a dimensional collapse caused be repeat antagonist Dr. Nefarious doing, well, something evil.

Said dimensional collapse has resulted in the appearance of rifts, which Ratchet and Clank can use to traverse the game’s levels in new and disorienting ways, as can the game’s many foes, allowing them to appear and attack from any dimension at any time. These rifts also allow Ratchet and Clank to move between dimensions just as suddenly as their foes, allowing for some great action pieces, such as the chase from the reveal trailer which showed the Lombax barely holding onto a charging prehistoric beast, only to be flung through several futuristic cities in quick succession, then onto a pirate ship, all without missing a beat.

Ze Lady Lombax
Our mysterious new heroine

The last moments of the reveal trailer have Ratchet’s constant companion Clank getting flung through another portal on his own this time, only to be discovered by a new, unnamed lady Lombax, who has been confirmed by Insomniac to be playable as well.

While this is not the first time in the series someone other than Ratchet has been playable, it will be interesting to see how this new Lombax differentiates herself from Ratchet in terms of moves and arsenal, and what her existence means for the Lombax race.

What are you looking forward to in the Rift Apart? I hope we see the Groovitron again. Nothing like the power of dance to crush your enemies, right?
