After a rough night and start of the day following Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) service suffering global outages, it appears the online gaming service may be coming back online, at least for some players. There are plenty of posts appearing about it from different parts of the world across social media, as well as my own personal PS5 starting to work online here in the UK too. It appears that PSN restoration is gradual, as some users are still waiting, so try to remain patient.
Sony’s official status website still marks their entire PSN service with a red indicator, showing “experiencing issues” on all tabs from account management and sign in to PlayStation Store purchases and downloads. What makes the situation particularly frustrating is Sony’s lack of response towards the service being down for so long. Sure, they’re probably in severe crisis mode, but silence (and poorly timed pre-scheduled tweets) doesn’t help the atmosphere of unease amongst PlayStation’s fanbase.
There has only been one official mention of the outages, which was on PlayStation’s official support page over on X (formerly Twitter), where they comedically downplayed the situation as possibly affecting “some users”. We now know exactly how far the scope of the outage extended, appearing to be global for every single PlayStation gamer, but Sony remains silent on the cause. Speculation is rife online, with theories around DDoS attacks and hackers appearing everywhere, but with no word from Sony to alleviate fears, we’re just left to wonder. But hey, if you were affected by the outages, you can always go get a free Krispy Kreme donut?
We’ll be sure to write an updated full report when we find out exactly what took down PSN for so long, but for now, at least some players can get online. Can you access PSN again yet? Sound off in the comments below, and keep your eyes on GameLuster to hear more as the situation unfolds.
