Steam Reveals Most-Played & Best-Selling Games Of 2020

PC-based gaming platform Steam has recently released several “Best of 2020” lists for fans to view. Rather than giving awards to a single game, Steam has divided each list into Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers. With the exception of the “Most Played” category, the qualifications for each tier have not yet been revealed at this time.

The “Best-Selling Games” category measures success via gross revenue earned specifically on the Steam platform. The highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 reached the Platinum tier, as did viral 2020 hits Fall Guys and Among Us. Perennial multiplayer favorites Rainbow Six Siege, Dota 2, and Monster Hunter World also made it into this tier. Unsurprisingly in a year which relied on digital means of staying in touch with friends and family, multiplayer games sold particularly well.

“Top New Releases” were games which debuted on Steam in 2020 and generated a high gross revenue during a single year. Cyberpunk 2077 and Fall Guys made this list as well, as did Borderlands 3, Baldur’s Gate 3, Death Stranding, The Outer Worlds, Sea of Thieves, and surprising Steam success Persona 4 Golden.

“Most Played” did not measure the total people who played these games in 2020, but instead the highest peak concurrent players. Platinum-tier games reached over 200,000 concurrent players. Once again, multiplayer titles reigned supreme, with Monster Hunter World, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Destiny 2, Dota 2, and Among Us all making the list. Cyberpunk 2077 makes another appearance on this list, as does the rather unexpected Life is Strange 2.

“Early Access Grads” honors games which left Steam Early Access in 2020 and went on to achieve success on the platform. The Game Awards (and Lusties!) Best Indie winner, Hades, appeared in this category, as did the DJ Max Respect V, Skater XL, Noita, and “The Deep Update” for Golf With Your Friends.

“Best of VR” measures VR-exclusive titles by gross revenue earned in 2020. This was a big year for virtual reality on Steam, with Pavlov, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, Half-Life Alyx, Beat Saber, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and more all reaching Platinum tier.

Finally, “Top Controller Games” awards games which support playing with a controller on Steam. These games were measured by how many active players used a controller each day when playing these games. The Platinum tier included both perennial favorites, such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Destiny 2, and Monster Hunter World, and new entries into this category, such as Fall Guys, Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, Cyberpunk 2077 and Persona 4 Golden.
