Prior to the June 21 Nintendo Direct event, many fans were hoping for a remake of a classic title. Some of the titles thrown around included Chrono Trigger, several early Fire Emblem titles, and more. However, one title was constantly brought up: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. And fans were not disappointed – the popular classic RPG is indeed receiving a remake, featuring modern graphics and releasing later this year!
Initially released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Legend of the Seven Stars was the first RPG ever released starring the iconic Mario. Its popularity and positive reviews led to the eventual development of other RPGs featuring Mario, such as the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi sub-series. Aided by new and returning allies, including Mallow the cloud creature and Geno the possessed doll, Mario must save the world from the threatening Smithy Gang. The game drew inspiration from several popular RPG titles of the time, including Square Enix’s Final Fantasy series.

The remake of Super Mario RPG will update the game to feature modern graphics. The party system will return, with Princess Peach, Mallow, Geno, and even the notorious Koopa King Bowser himself joining Mario’s group to take on the Gang. Legend of the Seven Stars will feature a turn-based battle system and a number of unique boss battles, as well as a vast and diverse world to explore. Players will be able to travel through the Mushroom Kingdom, Monstro Town, Nimbus Land, and more!
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars will release for the Nintendo Switch on November 17, 2023. It is currently available for pre-order via the Nintendo Switch eShop. This remake was only one of several exciting Mario-themed announcements made during the Nintendo Direct, including a currently untitled game starring Princess Peach, an upgraded version of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, and a brand-new 2D title called Super Mario Bros.
