In a new report from Eurogamer based on what was overheard at a Take-Two financial results call, we’ve heard directly what publisher Take-Two Interactive thinks of the Switch and its successor as a platform, and the insights were interesting to say the least. According to the article, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick said that “There was a time when Nintendo platforms are really geared at younger audiences and that was reflected in our release schedule […] now today with Switch and potentially with Switch 2, the Switch device can support any audience.” It may seem like a simple quote, but there’s some interesting implications underneath it.
It’s important to note that this quote came in the context of being asked about what type of support Switch 2 will have, and was followed by Zelnick highlighting that Civilization VII is on Switch. In sum, what Zelnick is saying is that the publishing company as a whole has shifted its approach towards the Switch, releasing more of its typically “mature” gaming output on Nintendo’s platform following a perceived shift in its audience, beyond just younger gamers and in favor of a broader all-ages player base.
Does this mean GTA VI will be releasing on Switch 2? Not necessarily! But it does leave the door open to it being a possibility. Take-Two sees the time of Nintendo platforms being aimed at younger gamers as being over, and it is responding my releasing more of its mature titles on the platform. GTA VI is very mature, and will undoubtedly be the biggest game of the year – with an entire new platform to take advantage of should it be able to make its way to the Switch 2. Time will tell how far Zelnick’s comments will go in terms of Take-Two support of the Switch 2, and how much the console hardware itself can support.
