Rocksteady had a hit on their hands for quite some time with the Batman: Arkham franchise. The series of Batman-focused, single-player-centric titles have sold over 32 million copies worldwide, but Rocksteady’s handling of the franchise took a turn for the worse after the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Now, according to a new report from Jason Schreier over at Bloomberg, Rocksteady may once again be returning to the world of Batman, and returning to their roots of making a single-player outing.
Part of the problem with Rocksteady’s pivot to making a live-service style game with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was that their talent at the studio had spent years making exclusively single-player games. The veering into live-service model development had a heavy cost on the staff, as evidenced by the massive layoffs following its failed release. Rocksteady may now be seeking to course-correct, but it will have quite a heavy task trying to restore trust with both the gaming audience and its development teams.
According to the report by Schreier, the new Batman-related project is still years away from making any noise, particularly as the team only just released Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League almost exactly a year ago at time of writing. Game development, especially in 2025, takes time, and after the huge sunk cost into Suicide Squad, it will likely take a long while before we hear more from Rocksteady’s Batman universe – but it’s still alive.
