The Last Of Us Multiplayer Could Be Free To Play

A job listing spotted by one eagle-eyed Reddit user could suggest that the upcoming The Last Of Us multiplayer will be free to play. Naughty Dog are presently seeking someone to fulfil the position of a Live Ops Producer. According to the job summary on Naughty Dog’s website, their role would be “to support our major new multiplayer title.”

“We are looking for the right candidate to get in early and help define the processes, requirements, and infrastructure that will support the project through launch and beyond,” the summary reads. Under the bonus skills section, it reads the ideal candidate should have “experience in a production role supporting a AAA, free to play, live title.”

The details of this free-to-play title remain unknown, there’s a good chance the job listing is concerning The Last Of Us multiplayer, a massive multiplayer title set in San Francisco, announced during the Summer Games Fest 2022. According to a Giant Bomb podcast (at the two-hour thirteen-minute mark), in June 2022, industry insider Jeff Grubb suggested that Naughty Dog “wanted to make it more ambitious; they wanted it to be its own thing.”

He added that the studio further “wanted to spend a lot of time building out the specific technology so they could do a live-service game in a Naughty Dog way, which means making it very easy for them to create new content and then just slot it in without you having to download a lot of stuff. They’re gonna make it very easy to keep it updated and add new content.”

Neil Druckmann confirmed during the Summer Games Fest that we would see “a lot more” of the multiplayer mode in 2023. For more The Last Of Us content, including our review for The Last Of Us Part I, stay tuned with GameLuster.
