Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is currently one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2024 and thanks to a recent interview with GamePro, we now know that the sequel to the original Hellblade will be locked at 30fps. However, this FPS lock seems to only be applicable to the Xbox Series X and S versions of the Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2.
We first learned of the FPS lock from the Hellblade 2‘s VFX director Mark Slater-Tunstill, who said the reason behind this decision was to give the game a more “cinematic” feel. The FPS lock wasn’t the only thing revealed about the console version of the game as the game will also feature dynamic resolution and no extra graphic options. As mentioned before, this will only be on the Xbox versions of the game, as the PC version will have no such lock.
This is quite the controversial decision as frame rate is a surprisingly heated topic within the world of gaming, as infamously with the case of Dragon’s Dogma 2 players who slaughtered countless NPCs to stop FPS drops, or with Redfall adding a 60fps mode after a disastrous launch. However, to make matters more interesting, this isn’t the only “controversial” decision the developer has made surrounding Hellblade 2, as Ninja Theory has confirmed that the game will be a digital exclusive.
This decision will likely earn the ire of several frame rate fanatics, but it shouldn’t deter players from playing the game. Considering how much effort has been put into creating immersion and realism within Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, the FPS lock does make sense as the relatively low FPS is similar to most films, and has been utilized in many games beforehand.
