Are you a fan of Viking-themed media, but have already completed every quest and challenge in last year's Assassin's Creed: Valhalla? Well, don't despair! There might just be a game for you out there - Valheim, a Viking-themed survival adventure developed by Iron Gate Studio.
Valheim became available in early February via Steam's Early Access service. Just over a week after the game's debut, the Iron Gate team made an official announcement via Steam that Valheim had surpassed one million players. The game also peaked at 160,000 concurrent players and 127,000 viewers on Twitch.
The developers thanked fans for their support and reinforced their commitment towards adding new content and improving the Valheim experience throughout 2021.
Valheim puts players in the role of a slain Norse warrior, who has been ferried to the mystical "tenth realm" - the titular Valheim - by the Valkyries. As the new custodian of the realm, the player is tasked with defeating monsters, crafting weapons and armor, and building everything from warships to mead halls to massive castles.
The game currently has a rating of "Overwhelmingly Positive" on Steam, with fans and reviewers alike praising its tricky but satisfying survival elements, clear path of progression, and support for cooperative play together with friends. Similar to fellow recent successes Among Us and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Valheim is a game which brings much-needed elements of collaboration and community into a world still under social distancing and quarantine rules due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Valheim currently costs $19.99 USD on Steam, and is a surprisingly small download for such a large and graphically gorgeous game. It is expected to receive continuous updates throughout 2021. It is currently unknown when the game will officially leave Early Access.
