Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla Officially Revealed

Longships emerge from the mist. Flaming arrows rain down from the sky. Vikings clash with Templars, and in the midst of it all, a lone assassin observes a mystical omen: Odin stands with him.

This is the age of the Vikings. It’s time when a bloody war made its way to peaceful England’s shores.

This is Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.

After months of teasing hints and mysterious comments – “the supernatural will play a role” “more intense than ever before” – the official reveal is finally here. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, the latest entry in the wildly popular stealth-action franchise, will be coming to Xbox One, Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4…and the next generation of consoles as well, having been announced for both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.

The trailer focuses on a sprawling, epic, bloody battle between a troop of Viking raiders and the armies of ninth-century England, accompanied by haunting, intense music. The yet-nameless Viking assassin in the trailer gets to show off his stuff in a big way, using a hidden blade to defeat his heavily armored opponent.

The game itself allows players to take control of a Viking leader named Eivor. Eivor can be either male or female and will feature a highly customizable appearance, with a multitude of options for clothing, hair, war paint, and more. They will lead their community from Norway to England, with the game confirmed to feature critical locations in both countries. Valhalla will have an open world, with major English cities to visit, including London, Winchester, and Jórvík.

Valhalla is confirmed to feature all-new, better-than-ever combat. Lead your team on raids with your trusty longship. Clash with the enemy in all-out Assaults, which have been described by Ubisoft as “big setpiece moments” revolving around conquering massive fortifications held by the forces of King Aelfred of Wessex, aka Aelfred the Great. Enemy variety was also revealed to be a significant priority for Ubisoft during the game’s development.

Eivor will not be the only character available for players to customize. You can populate your longship with a crew of unique warriors, as well as establish a permanent settlement as your base and invite various people to live and work there. See your clan expand from a tightly bound group of fighters to a sprawling, profitable settlement as you truly make this beautiful open world your own.

In addition to the brand new Viking-based setting, many vital elements of the Assassin’s Creed franchise will be included. Both Hidden Ones (aka Assassins) and the Order of Ancients (aka Templars) were spotted in the trailer. Also, Ubisoft has confirmed that Layla Hassan, a modern-day member of the Assassin Brotherhood, will also continue adventures in her game. It remains to be seen what she will learn about (and from?) her long-ago Viking predecessors.

Primary development for Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla was done by Ubisoft Montreal, the studio responsible for Assassin’s Creed: Origins and Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. They were supported by 12 other Ubisoft studios, as well as the developer’s frequent external partner, Sperasoft.

So far, developer Ubisoft has only announced the release date as “Holiday 2020.” Hopefully, a more definite date will be revealed soon.

The game is available for pre-order now via the official Ubisoft website. Also, a “Golden Steelbook” edition of Valhalla will feature a “Season Pass.” The contents of the Season Pass have not yet been revealed.

GameLuster will continue to provide you with up to the minute news on Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla as more information is released between now and the title’s release date. So join us together on this epic Viking adventure!
