Battle Princess Madelyn Leaps into Action December 6

If you’re looking for a dose of retro sidescrolling nostalgia (think Ghost n’ Goblins), then Battle Princess Madelyn might just be what you need.

I just love the ghostly dog that follows Madelyn around, as melancholy as the idea of it is.

This pixel-art, action-packed adventure has you take the role of the eponymous Madelyn. An evil wizard kidnaps Madelyn’s family and kills her dog, and now it’s time to save the day. Equipped with various weapons and even the ghost of your dead dog, you have just the right arsenal for the job.

The game has 10 levels, two modes, collectibles, and a lovely story behind it. Your dead dog (now living on as a ghost) has abilities to help aid you in your journey to save your family. Creative Director Christopher Obritsch and his young daughter collaborated on this project. According to the Steam page, the game started as such:

When Creative Director Christopher Obritsch’s daughter Madelyn wanted to be in Ghouls ‘n Ghosts and fight “Green Head,” he said it was someone else’s game — but he could make her one that was like it. “But girls can’t be knights, Daddy. Only boys…” she said, to which he answered, “Pshh…What color do you want your armor to be?” The answer was pink 😉 And that’s how this game started.

Battle Princess Madelyn is the product of a successful Kickstarter campaign that launched in 2017 and reached well beyond its goal. With over 3,000 backers and accumulating $212,665 total (with the base goal being $60,000), it was a popular game on the crowdfunding site.

Battle Princess Madelyn launches on Dec. 6, 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Look out for our review of the game soon!
