Cyberpunk 2077 Hits The Road

Film buffs will recognize today as the fifth anniversary of the release of Mad Max: Fury Road. It will also be a day fans of Cyberpunk 2077 will remember as the day a news bombshell hit. Like any properly earthshaking event, it started so innocently.

The Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter feed threw up a looping four-second GIF of a car sitting out in what looked like a section of the Mojave Desert. The vehicle appears to be a variant of the Quadra sports car featured in previous videos.

Like any good Twitter post, there is some snark, there is some salt, and there are other GIFs in response. Even R. Talsorian Games, the creators of the Cyberpunk pen-and-paper RPG, asks when it’s going to get delivered to their HQ. However, in this particular post, there is also some fresh news.

The image captured in the GIF was not something staged strictly to celebrate a cool road movie/car chase. Several people replying to the post asked the natural question if the location was present in the game. CD Projekt RED promptly and without equivocation affirmed that yes, it was.

They could have been coy about it, saying that the image was taken from within the RED Engine, the in-house game engine being used to create the game.  But they didn’t try to split hairs and didn’t try to play word games with the fans.

Previous videos already demonstrated that driving would be an element in the game. It now seems that we’ll be able to not merely drive around town but drive completely clear of it as well. How far those highways and byways stretch, that we don’t know yet. But we have a whole new thing to add to the pile of excitement.

Cyberpunk 2077 is slated for release on September 17, 2020.
