Famitsu Sales: Xenoblade Chronicles X Debuts #1, Assassin’s Creed Shadows Takes #5

Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers March 17 – 23, as a hot week of four new releases sees Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition take first place, thanks to almost 75,000 copies sold. It continues the trend of Xenoblade being a well-performing franchise for Nintendo, and increasing digital sales numbers guarantees an even higher Japanese audience when taken into account.

This is a big debut for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, especially considering it’s competing with Atelier YumiaBleach: Rebirth of Souls and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The latter was a controversial release, especially in Japan, which seems to be reflected in its sales figures. Assassin’s Creed Shadows only managed to sell a little under 18,000 units in its first week, what appears to be a new franchise low for the series in Japan. Digital performance is strong and it’s still breaking records for Ubisoft, so we don’t actually know how well Assassin’s Creed Shadows performed overall in Japan; only that the physical sales are low.

It’s a low debut for Assassin’s Creed Shadows on the Famitsu sales chart; but overall the game has performed well.
