Microsoft, the creator of the Xbox, has just purchased Mojang for 2.5 billion dollars, in hopes to put in some influence on the giant sandbox game, Minecraft. Minecraft has a large following, and will therefore be an asset to the company. In a statement on their website they said, “Our investments in cloud, Xbox Live and mobile technology will enable players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect with the Minecraft community.”
There is a catch though. The executives at Mojang will not be joining Microsoft on this journey. Notch has publicly spoken out against big companies in the past, and it is clear that he wants to stay indie.
Microsoft just release on both Playstation 4 and Xbox One, and it will be interesting to watch the two grow separately now.
Minecraft has sold more than 100 million copies to date.
