Ninja Theory Aren’t Replacing Voice Actors With AI

Reports were circulating yesterday that Ninja Theory, developers of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, were using AI technology to replace voice actors. Ninja Theory have now responded online to clarify the situation, and it’s good news. The AI voice work is only being used on timing and placement in early development work, and is not being used in the final product.

The report originated from GLHF, in an article which explores how voice actors in the games industry are concerned for their jobs. The field of AI is rapidly advancing, as new businesses emerge seeking to provide AI alternatives to human occupations. Altered AI is one such company, with a library of digital voices that can be used by game developers to record their own dialogue and have it converted into other voices and given to their characters.

Vocal performances were a key part of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

GLHF then specified Ninja Theory as one such developer using this technology. This sparked concern online that the studio would be replacing voice actors in their games with AI equivalents. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has a heavy focus on metaphorical story telling, expressed so well through the voice work performances of the talented voice cast. The game is often considered to be a work of art for just how well it tells a complex story of struggle and psychosis. Ninja Theory soon took to Twitter to clarify the situation with the following statement.

Voice actors are an under appreciated part of the video game craft, so we are naturally relieved to hear that the AI work is only being done for development, and not for the final game.
