Nintendo Switch Sales Top 20 Million in Japan

Surprising probably no one, the Nintendo Switch is continuing to sell like hotcakes. If hotcakes were also notoriously hard to get hold of. A new report from Famitsu reveals that the Switch has now surpassed 20 million sales in Japan alone. When we look at the console’s sales worldwide, it’s just shy of a staggering 85 million. That was the number of global sales from Nintendo’s latest financial report, anyway. Who knows how much it will have changed even in the time since that was measured?

The Famitsu article also provides insight into Japan’s top 5 bestselling Switch games:

  1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  3. Pokémon Sword and Shield
  4. Splatoon 2
  5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

No real shockers there. A list of the top 5 bestselling Switch games worldwide would probably look pretty similar.

If the upcoming improved version of the Switch, often tentatively referred to as the Nintendo Switch Pro, manages to make getting hold of one somewhat easier, these sales figures are only going to keep skyrocketing in the near future. It looks like Nintendo really was onto a winning formula with the Switch’s capability to be both handheld and home console in one. It’s no surprise there’s talk of a similar type of setup for the expansive library of Steam games in the works. No sign of a PS semi-Vita just yet though. But hey, it could happen!
