It feels like every year is a big year for Pokémon at this rate, but we’ve had official confirmation that 2024 was particularly gigantic. Thanks to new data from the Circana Retail Tracking service via Mat Piscatella, we now know that Pokémon was the #1 toy property in terms of sales in 2024 – and was the only one to surpass $1 billion in sales! Note also that this data is specific to the US, so globally we’re sure that was even more outrageously large.
These numbers include all ‘toys’ in the Pokémon franchise, from things like plushies and figurines all the way through to the hugely in-demand Pokémon Trading Card Game. It’s impressive that Pokémon was able to achieve this despite not even releasing a new game in 2024. Usually a newly released game or DLC will help a franchise keep strong sales, but even left unsupported by its mainline game entries, the series still managed to outperform all others on the market.
There’s just no stopping Pokémon at this rate, with a never-ending flood of incredible new cards, game announcements, a successful anime series, crossovers and more seemingly always giving new ways to engage with the almost 30 year old franchise. Despite its age, the Pokémon craze continues even in children today, and seems to never die out for many adults too – like us! It’s a fitting way to close out the celebrations, after yesterday’s Pokémon day saw the reveal of a new game and new updates on the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
