Resident Evil 4 Remake: How to Parry

Among the many gameplay changes to Resident Evil 4 Remake, Leon’s trusty knife may have undergone the most. Unlike the original game, this time your knife functions a bit more like the one from Resident Evil 2 Remake, but with a few new tricks. The main one being the ability to completely deflect incoming attacks with a skillful parry move.

Parrying may feel like a strange addition for a survival horror game like Resident Evil 4 Remake, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll wonder how you ever survived without it. While the move is easy to pull off in theory, mastering it will take a bit of effort. This guide includes a full breakdown on how to perform the parry in Resident Evil 4 Remake.

How to Parry in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil 4 Remake parry

If you’ve ever played a game with a parry before, you will know the basic idea: press the correct button at the perfect moment to deflect an incoming attack and prevent yourself from taking damage. That’s true for Resident Evil 4 Remake, but there are a few wrinkles. First is that you need a knife on you to perform the move. Leon comes with a repairable Combat Knife, but if it is broken and you have no spare knives, you won’t be parrying anything.

With a knife handy, and an enemy looking to cause you harm, wait for them to attack and press either the left bumper or space bar to parry. Timing is everything here. If you’re a bit early, that’s okay. Leon will still deflect an attack even if you press the button a little before the attack will land. However, if you time it just right then you get a “perfect parry” which can open up your attacker to a melee counterattack.

It isn’t just melee attacks that can be parried, either. Even thrown weapons can be smacked out of the air with a well-timed press of a button, so practice up!

That’s all there is to pulling off a parry in Resident Evil 4 Remake. What do you think about this new mechanic? Does it enhance the horror, or make things a little too action-focused?
