The long-awaited sequel to the cult classic 2008 roguelike / platformer / explorer Spelunky is here at last. First announced earlier this year, Spleunky 2 released for PlayStation 4 on September 15 and is now available for Windows PC via Steam. In Spelunky 2, gamers play as Ana, the daughter of the previous game’s protagonist, as she explores caves, volcanoes, ice fields, jungles and more in order to figure out just what happened to her parents.
Players and streamers have already reported that Spelunky 2 is just as delightfully difficult as the original – perhaps even more so. The early levels – located in an underground world called “the Dwelling” – are replete with tons of ways to die and be forced to start over from the very beginning of the level. Familiar monsters such as bats and spiders are joined by the fast-digging Cave Moles and the Horned Lizards, who can knock you off platforms with a deadly rolling attack.
Plus, the many lively, colorful worlds of Spelunky 2 are filled with plenty of secrets to discover, items to collect, mounts to ride and NPCs both helpful and harmful. This brand new game guarantees that no two play-throughs will ever be the same. Some reviewers have already predicted that less than half of players will end up completing the game, and that it might be months and months before every hidden secret is uncovered by patient, diligent gamers.
However, the PC version of Spelunky 2 is currently missing one key element: online multiplayer mode. Creator Derek Yu and developer Mossmouth reported that they were experiencing difficulties with multiplayer in the PlayStation 4 version of the game, and want to take extra time to fix these issues before adding multiplayer to the PC version. It will be implemented in a later update.
