Despite only releasing in June last year, 4v4 hero shooter Star Wars: Hunters is being shut down later this year on October 1, and will become unavailable to all players. The game will remain live until then, with the final content drop releasing on April 15 coinciding with the disabling of in-app purchases. Zygna say the “decision was not made lightly” in their official announcement post, with the game having only been available for less than a year.
It’s a shame to see Star Wars: Hunters already closing its doors, especially when it was only a few months ago that a PC port was announced. The free-to-play title is currently only available on Nintendo Switch along with iOS and Android mobile devices, and the news of the shutdown implies that the Steam PC launch will no longer be happening. The page to wishlist the game is even still available, suggesting the choice to cut Star Wars: Hunters off was a very recent one.
Set between the original Star Wars trilogy and Disney’s sequel trilogy, Hunters allowed players to battle it out as some of their favorite Star Wars archetypes, such as a Wookiee juggernaught, a Mandalorian vanguard or a Dark Side assassin. Whilst originally announced in 2018, and soft-launched in some regions in 2021, it wasn’t until 2024 that Star Wars: Hunters finally materialized – to negative reviews from critics. It’s safe to assume this also means Star Wars: Hunters wasn’t profitable enough, with Zynga choosing the drastic action of sunsetting it entirely already.
