Today's "Night City Wire" live stream was packed with new information about CD Projekt Red's upcoming post-apocalyptic RPG Cyberpunk 2077. In particular, one piece of news was something few fans had expected: the announcement of an animated television series.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be coming to Netflix sometime in 2022. It is a collaboration between CD Projekt RED and Studio Trigger, a popular animation studio that is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Trigger is quite familiar with futuristic stories, scrappy, determined young protagonists, and gorgeous urban settings. They are responsible for stunning original creations, including Kill la Kill, BNA: Brand New Animal, and the feature film Promare, which received high praise and saw extensive theatrical screenings.

Edgerunners will be directed by Trigger's "dream team" — founder Hiroyuki Imaishi and designer Yoh Yoshinari, who previously worked together on 2013's Kill la Kill, one of the studio's most beloved offerings. Producer Saya Elder describes Edgerunners as something enjoyable for existing fans of Cyberpunk 2077 as well as the perfect gateway for new fans to get introduced to the Cyberpunk universe for the very first time.

Currently planned to run for ten episodes, Edgerunners will be a stand-alone story. Although it will take place within the game's primary setting of Night City, it will introduce new characters as well as brand new plot and story elements, presumably centered around the mysterious titular "Edgerunners," a group of mercenary outlaws. While the anime's announcement video didn't show off any scenes or artwork yet, Studio Trigger's stark, eye-catching style seems perfectly matched to the grim world of Night City.

Unfortunately, there are still two years to go until Edgerunners' planned to debut on Netflix. However, luckily, we don't have to wait quite so long for the game itself, as Cyberpunk 2077 will be released in November. Additionally, if you're craving some Studio Trigger goodness in the meantime, BNA: Brand New Animal will be released globally on Netflix on June 30.
