Super Mario 3D World for Switch Will Have Online, Amiibo Functions

Earlier today, it was announced that the 2013 Wii U platforming classic Super Mario 3D World will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch in 2021. This long-anticipated port was just one of the announcements made during Nintendo’s Anniversary Direct event, which celebrated 35 years of games starring the adventurous plumber Mario, his friends, foes and more.

Just getting to experience 3D World (plus the new, as of yet unrevealed Bowser’s Fury content addition) on the Switch would be enough – but of course, Nintendo, just like Mario himself, is jumping even higher and going above and beyond to provide exciting ways to play! It was revealed that, in addition to local multiplayer options, which allows players to co-op with up to three friends, 3D World and Bowser’s Fury will also feature online multiplayer. Team up with friends from all over the world to play as Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad to save the Sprixie Kingdom from the evil Bowser!

Additionally, 3D World for the Switch will feature Amiibo functionality. Scan in your favorite Mario characters to earn helpful in-game bonuses. Plus, two brand new Amiibo will be releasing alongside the game in 2021. These adorable new figures feature Mario and Peach wearing the Cat Suit accessory, a new speed- and agility-boosting power-up which made its first appearance in the original Super Mario 3D World.
