Today, Nintendo surprised fans with a Direct video event celebrating the 35th anniversary of beloved plumber Mario. Several exciting Mario-themed announcements were made during the event – and one of them being a port which fans have been eagerly awaiting for years.
Yes, you heard right. Brightly colored platformer Super Mario 3D World, which originally released for the Wii U console in 2013, is coming to the Nintendo Switch. The game’s option for co-op play definitely seems like a perfect fit for the popular hybrid console.
Super Mario 3D World, the sixth main platform-focused title in the Super Mario series, tells the story of Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad (and Rosalina!) as they save the Sprixie Kingdom from the clutches of the villainous Bowser. The game, which received positive reviews from fans and critics alike, introduced a number of new power-ups for Mario and his friends. These included the adorable Cat Suit, which increased the character’s speed and granted the ability to climb walls and discover hidden secrets, and the Goomba Mask, which introduced a stealth-like mechanic of blending in with enemy Goombas.
In addition to the base version of 3D World, a new piece of content entitled Bowser’s Fury is also coming to the Switch. While today’s Direct only revealed a few tantalizing looks at Bowser’s Fury, it seems that the Koopa King will finally be getting a chance to join in the 3D adventure. (Do you think Bowser will get to don a Cat Suit of his own? I hope so – he’d look adorable!)
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will debut for the Nintendo Switch on February 12, 2021. So to the Mario fans among you – get ready to grab a friend, snag the power-up of your choice, and save the Sprixies in this long-awaited port!
This wasn’t the only big news to come from the Super Mario themed Nintendo Direct. Classic fans can also experience four older titles on the Game & Watch Super Mario Bros.
