In Take-Two’s latest financial results Q&A session (as reported by IGN), company boss Strauss Zelnick expressed the company’s confidence in their upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 with an impressive yet subtle flex. Whilst talking about the shift of gamers to PC and potential falling console sales, Zelnick said that “when you have a big title in the market, and we have many of them coming, historically that has sold consoles”, going on to add “and I think that will happen this year […] I think there will be a meaningful uptick in console sales”, in reference to games releasing from both Take-Two and other publishers this year.
What Zelnick is effectively saying here is that whilst console sales may be down by some metrics, the upcoming GTA 6 (alongside other games, of course) will move the needle and get consoles off store shelves and into the hands of gamers. That’s a good sign of confidence from the publisher behind some of the most iconic franchises in gaming, and promising for those getting hyped that GTA 6 may be worth the wait after all. Of course, a publisher being optimistic about their game isn’t the most breaking of news, but the degree to which Zelnick displays confidence is still noteworthy.
Another interesting note from this discussion is the context it came in, with Zelnick commenting that “we have seen PC become a much more important part of what used to be a console business”, when asked about the lack of a confirmed PC release for GTA 6. It will still eventually come to PC, but for now it seems Take-Two are not rushing to make PC a day-one part of a Rockstar game release just yet, but potentially in the future. Not only is PC on the table for future game releases day-one, but also potentially the Switch based on some other comments made by Zelnick.
