Xbox head Phil Spencer praises Nintendo first party IP

If there is one thing that makes Microsoft a better company when it comes to the Xbox division it is Phil Spencer, unlike many others in the game industry he is commonly discussing his competitors, but also giving credit where credit is due. Frequently he discusses Nintendo and Sony and has many nice words to be said on both companies with his most recent praise going towards Nintendo’s first party efforts. We all know the Wii U would sink without Nintendo commonly trying to make the best games they could but this is thanks to some of the first party content around.

While talking with Eurogamer Spencer was asked if first party games are needed to sell hardware, and of course pointed the Wii U suggesting that in the case first party driving sales the console should be selling more.

Spencer had this to say:

On the Wii U, I think people downplay how many units they’ve sold. I’ve got a Wii U, I think there’s some great games on there. I think Splatoon’s a really nice game and I don’t think there’s a first-party out there that has the strength of IP that Nintendo has. They’re always a beacon to me when I look at what it means to build a first-party portfolio of products, they’ve done a great job.
