If there’s one thing to be sure of, it’s that Star Wars games, and even other forms of media like its shows and movies are seemingly hitting their stride again. When I was growing up, it seemed as if there were multiple Star Wars games released every year. Of course, things have slowed down a bit, but players are still getting new gaming content from a galaxy far, far away annually. And with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releasing on April 28, gamers like myself are salivating at the thought of getting to play yet another stellar Star Wars title.
Over the years, developers and publishers alike have given players some truly iconic Star Wars games that have not only been cornerstones for the franchise, but for gaming in general. There are titles like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars Galaxies, and even the original Star Wars: Battlefront games, that really gave players something to be excited about, not only as Star Wars fans but as a gamer too. But even with that being said, there are some really great concepts that just simply haven’t been treaded yet in a Star Wars game, and we think they have some merit to become great games that players may enjoy playing for themselves. So, let’s check them out!
Clone Wars RPG
As a child of the late 90s, the Prequel Trilogy was an important part of my childhood. Seeing what seemed like a large enough galaxy grow into a never-ending battlefield was something that was almost overwhelming. And while we’ve had games like Knights Of The Old Republic in the past, having the ability to play a Mass Effect type of Star Wars game that puts you in the role of diplomatic Jedi navigating the galaxy would be exciting. If you’re curious as to how this may work, just look at most of the Clone Wars animated series. It had loads of one-off episodes that would serve perfectly for that KOTOR and Mass Effect style of gameplay.
Second Life: Star Wars Edition
Of course, the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG is still alive and kicking, but it doesn’t really pack the same punch as Star Wars: Galaxies did back in its heyday. Though, I think it could be taken a step further. It would be great to play an online Star Wars game that’s more centered on players being able to live out their own Star Wars journey in a Second Life of sorts. You could be a Jedi, Smuggler, Gangster, or even a humble Moisture Farmer if you’d like. I’d imagine there’d be several planets to explore and live your life out on. It would be a gigantic game, but you’d have to imagine it being in the cards. Right?
Call of Duty: Rebels
Many players remember Star Wars: Republic Commando fondly, so why not give players a similar, but more Call of Duty-like take on a game centered around the Rebellion during the Galactic Civil War? Star Wars media like Rogue One or Andor are perfect examples of how Star Wars can be mature and grounded, giving way to video games that similarly capture that grim side of being the good guys. It doesn’t have to be something grandiose, but just a game with a cast of characters worth rooting for, taking place in the many iconic locations of the Original Trilogy of films.
The Prey We Never Got
Before Bethesda’s 2017 reboot of Prey was released, there was a different version of it. It was an open-world title that had players going around an alien world, searching out bounties. And if you’re a Star Wars fan, then you already know that this idea would be a perfect way for players to adventure across the universe. Imagine running down the neon-soaked streets of Coruscant as you’re tailing a bounty. Similarly to the chase scene in Attack of the Clones, you could leap from ship to ship, dropping out of the sky, and landing on your target. Just thinking about how fun this game could be is enough to send a fan into a frenzy.
Star Wars Survival Game
One of the only genres Star Wars hasn’t turned up in just yet is survival. Games like Ark, Rust, and DayZ have all made the genre boom, and it’s something that really could work for the Star Wars IP. Whether you’re a Tusken Raider, Gungan, or merely an Ewok, this idea could really work in creating an enjoyable way for players to pass the time on the planets that they know and love. Plus, you’d get to fight off some of the galaxy’s most fearsome inhabitants too!
Clone Wars Team-Based Shooter
If you’ve played Aliens: Fireteam Elite, then you may know where I’m going with this one. Imagine being in a Clone team of four, where you and three friends can each take on roles in order to complete objectives and make your way through some chaotically fun battles. Now tell me that this doesn’t sound like fun. What was so enjoyable about the Clone Wars animated series was its clone troopers, the dialogue, personalities, and the reliance on each other was always impactfully written. Translate that into a game, and you’ve struck gold!
But, it’s easy to come up with ideas for what we’d like to see from the Star Wars universe. It’s seemingly a vacuum at this point, where even good ideas can be shot down if the majority of the fandom gets behind their keyboards. So that leaves us here. What game concepts would you like to see developed into full Star Wars titles?
