Multiplayer Title Crash Team Rumble Announced at Game Awards

A number of celebrities and other big names showed up at the 2022 Game Awards. Al Pacino admitting that he “doesn’t play video games” and The Muppets’ Animal asking Hideo Kojima if he can star in his own game are definitely going to go down as some of the event’s most memorable moments. But another all-star appearance was from the adventure-loving bandicoot himself – Crash Bandicoot, who showed up in the flesh (or would that be “in the fur?”) to announce the new game Crash Team Rumble.

Crash developer Toys for Bob had been hinting for months that a new game was on the way, especially following the positive reception of latest main series title Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, which released in 2020. However, few were expecting a multiplayer team-based title. Rumble is the second “fighting-focused” title in Crash’s repertoire, following Crash Bash – although the trailer shown at the Game Awards indicated that Rumble will likely not draw much inspiration from Bash, one of the series’ most forgotten entries.

Crash Team Rumble will feature two teams battling it out to see who can obtain the most Wumpa Fruit. Battles will support up to eight players each, and will take place on a variety of arenas taken from locations throughout the Crash series. A number of playable characters were shown off in the initial trailer, including Crash himself, his sister Coco, the villainous Dr. Neo Cortex and Dr. N. Tropy, and Tawna Bandicoot using her It’s About Time redesign. Teasers for the game indicate that new characters will also be introduced in Rumble, including a bat-themed character who seems to be a villain. Each character will have unique skills and abilities, making Crash Team Rumble similar to the MOBA genre of games.

Rumble will be published by Activision and is currently set to release some time in 2023, although a firm release date has not yet been set. More information will likely be revealed at a later date. It was only one of several games announced during the 2022 edition of the Game Awards. Other exciting announcements included Hades 2, Death Stranding 2, and DLC for upcoming tactical strategy title Fire Emblem Engage.
