It’s-a me, Mario! No, it’s-a me, Mario! Wait, what? Yes, you heard that right – we’re ALL Mario! Celebrate the 35th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. title with an all new online competitive experience from Nintendo, announced during today’s Mario-centric Direct event.
Super Mario 35 will allow up to 35 players to compete against one another in an online battle of the plumbers! Each player will complete their own Super Mario Bros. course – but with a twist. When you defeat an enemy, it will not disappear for good, but instead be sent to menace one of your opponents. If you want to be the last Mario standing (or is that running?) and win the match, you’ll have to be quick, alert, and always aware of what’s going on around you. Plus, items and power-ups now have new functions which may allow you to mess with your opponents as well.
Mix and match it up with four different ways of deciding which enemy to attack: the one with the most coins, the lowest time, the one attacking you, or pick at random. From what we can see, it plays very similar to the Switch exclusive Tetris 99, another unlikely battle royale title.
Super Mario 35 will be available exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online members beginning October 1, 2020. It is a limited time event and will remain available only until March 31, 2021 – so you’ll have to grab a subscription as soon as possible if you want to play.
Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions are available starting at $19.99 for 12 months. A seven-day free trial is also available if you just want to give it a try before committing.
