Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers July 14 – 20, as Donkey Kong Bananza debuts and its physical sales numbers are good, but not incredible. With just under 128,000 copies sold, Donkey Kong Bananza had a strong launch but couldn’t outsell Mario Kart World which is already in its seventh week.
Whilst it’s expected that Mario Kart World will sell high, especially given it’s bundled with so many Switch 2 consoles, Donkey Kong Bananza‘s sales are still a little disappointing. Bananza fails to outsell Donkey Kong Country Returns in its first week on the Wii back in 2010, which launched with 163,000 copies sold on the Media Creates sales chart. Granted, that was a time when physical game sales were far more common.
Donkey Kong Bananza also comes nowhere near Super Mario Odyssey, which sold more than 500,000 units at launch back in October 2017. Keep in mind that these numbers are physical only, and Donkey Kong Bananza likely has a high digital sales rate, even in Japan. We don’t have a full picture yet, but this first glimpse isn’t too exciting.
