Fire Emblem Engage Guide: How to Make Friends With Sommie

One of the most unique elements of the tactical strategy game Fire Emblem Engage is the Somniel, a floating island where players and their recruited units can retreat and relax between battles. Like the My Castle feature in Fire Emblem Fates or Garreg Mach Monastery in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, the Somniel is filled with activities that can strengthen units’ battle skills and Support relationships alike. And that’s not all! The Somniel is also home to Sommie, an adorable cat/dog-like creature who has guarded this mystical realm for ages.

Interacting with Sommie can be a great way for players to earn Bond Fragments. Forming a bond with Sommie is also helpful when it comes to the other activities available around the Somniel, as it will help out the player if it likes them well enough. This guide will cover how to keep a good relationship with Sommie and use Sommie to obtain Bond Fragments, which can then be used to create and meld Bond Rings to use in battle.

How to Find Sommie

Sommie first shows up in the Somniel after the player completes Chapter 6 of the main game. Upon entering the Somniel after chapter 6, the player will be prompted to head to the Grotto, a cave-like area near the very southern tip of the Somniel. There, they will be introduced to Sommie, who resides in a shrine within the Grotto. Although “Sommie” is the creature’s default name, players can rename it whatever they like.

Once Sommie has been unlocked, players should visit it in the Grotto after each battle, whether main chapter, Paralogue, or side Skirmish. Sommie is a consistent source of Bond Fragments, a useful currency in Fire Emblem Engage. The cave where Sommie lives also has a chance to spawn Bond Fragments, Ingots (used for forging weapons), and Presents that can be given to units to raise their Support levels, so checking it frequently is recommended.

Feed Sommie Its Favorite Foods

Sommie1

Sommie is pretty much constantly hungry and can be fed over and over again. However, Sommie will only spawn Bond Fragments the first time it is fed after each battle. Simply click on Sommie, then select “Feed,” then choose the food Sommie will eat. While Sommie will generally give 100 Bond Fragments regardless of what it is fed, it does give a sad little whimper when fed food it dislikes. And nobody wants to see Sommie sad!

Any ingredients that can be used in cooking can be fed to Sommie. Generally, Sommie is not picky and will respond positively to most foods. However, there are a few foods that Sommie is not a fan of. Here are all the foods that Sommie Dislikes, Likes, and Loves in Fire Emblem Engage:

Sommie Dislikes: Chicken, Eggs, Nuts, Onions, Salmon, Spices

Sommie Loves: Apples, Beans, Cabbages, Rare Fish, Rare Fruits, Rare Vegetables, Grapes, Minced Fish, Oranges, Peaches, Pork, Sardines

Sommie Likes: All other Food items

Give Sommie Some Pets

Once Sommie has been fed, you can select “Pet” and then hit the A button repeatedly to pet Sommie. After a few pets, Sommie will shake itself happily and give you another 100 Bond Fragments. Continuing to pet Sommie after this point will not reward you with any additional Bond Fragments, but will increase Sommie’s friendship meter. Repeatedly petting Sommie is the quickest way to build its friendship meter up to the maximum level in a short amount of time.

Play Dress Up With Sommie

Sommie2

The last way you can interact with Sommie in its shrine is by dressing it up. You can change the color of the scarf Sommie wears and choose between several accessories including top hats, wings, sunglasses, and more. You can even give Sommie a stylish mane of red and blue hair to perfectly match Alear!

Dressing up Sommie does not earn you any Bond Fragments – although it is a lot of fun, so you should definitely give it a try regardless. Changing Sommie’s outfit does raise the friendship meter a small amount, so it is useful in keeping Sommie happy. Plus, it just looks so cute in all those little accessories!

Sommie Helps Out Around the Somniel

Sommie4

When you feed, pet, or dress up Sommie, you will see a friendship meter in the bottom right corner of the screen. You will know that the meter is at max because a heart will appear next to Sommie’s face. It is recommended that you keep the meter maxed at all times because, when it is maxed, Sommie will be able to help you with various tasks around the Somniel.

There are three tasks Sommie can help you with: Strength Training (unlocked after recruiting Prince Alfred of Firene), Fishing (unlocked after recruiting Prince Diamant of Brodia), and Wyvern Riding (unlocked after recruiting Princess Ivy of Elusia.) When you start the activity, if your friendship meter is high enough, you will be asked whether or not you want Sommie to join you. You should always have Sommie help if available, as the bonuses it provides are fairly significant.

Here is what Sommie can do to help you with various tasks:

  • Strength Training – If you mess up the timing and get a “Bad” hit, there is a chance that Sommie will replace it with a “Good.” This is useful, as most Strength Training exercises fail you if you get more than three “Bad” scores in a single attempt.
  • Fishing – Sommie will decrease the fish’s health bar, allowing you to catch larger and trickier fish more quickly. Sommie can also save you if you do not press the A button in time to reel in the fish, giving you a chance to catch it even if you mess up.
  • Wyvern Riding – Sommie will automatically destroy some of the targets for you, allowing you to earn a higher score and better rewards.

Having Sommie help out with tasks around the Somniel is a major benefit. You should definitely make sure to visit Sommie in its shrine between battles and keep its friendship meter maxed as much as possible. Sommie is not just an adorable companion you can spend time with, it can be quite the helpful assistant as well!
