In a blow to 2025’s release schedule, Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed until next year. Originally set for a release later this year, Rockstar Games has formally announced a delay over on their social media, confirming a specific release date of May 26 in 2026. Their announcement apologises for the delay, and thanks fans for their support. Rockstar also specifies that their goal is to “deliver at the level of quality” fans “expect and deserve”, hence the delay.
Rockstar says they’ll have more information to share with us soon, but we’re not quite sure what that will be yet. With the delay now pushing the game to just over an entire year away, we’re not expecting to see any new marketing materials for the game for a while now. Perhaps later in the year we’ll get another trailer, as publisher Take-Two has made clear they have no desire to advertise such an anticipated game too far in advance of its release.
A lot has been riding on GTA VI‘s release. The release of the game was expected by the industry to boost console sales, a bump more needed than ever in the wake of tariffs causing price increases to both Xbox and PlayStation systems. With a delay to 2026, platform holders may be disappointed they’re missing out on that GTA rush, but other publishers may breathe a sigh of relief that there’s room for them to release their own games without competition, like the recently-changed release of Borderlands 4.
