Nintendo Is Preventing Screen Recording On The Nintendo Today App

Nintendo Today is a recently released app that gives players a daily update on all things Nintendo, and it has given us some interesting news so far. The Nintendo Today app is where we learned of all the new default icons that will be coming to Switch 2, along with its USB keyboard support options. For some reason though, Nintendo seems to have enabled measures to protect against screen recordings and screenshots of the Nintendo Today app, as was spotted by Reddit user r/Cube_play_8 who documented the change.

He suggests that a recent app update changed how he was able to capture Nintendo Today content, which also seems to differ across mobile OS, with some still allowing it and others not doing so. It’s a confusing change, as Nintendo Today is a publicly available app. Users do need to have a Nintendo Account to use it, but none of the content is paywalled in any way, nor is it particularly exciting. Even just screen recording advertising content from Mario Kart World gets blocked off.

The Nintendo Today app gives fans a daily dose of Nintendo, but it seems they don’t like the content to be shared.

It’s worth noting that this is quite a standard practice for some video services on mobile. iOS offers options to developers to prevent screen recording on Apple devices quite easily, as used by companies like Netflix to prevent the redistribution of content. The confusion here comes from the fact that Nintendo Today is already available to everyone, so all that blocking screen recording does is prevent the easy archival and sharing of the app’s already accessible content.

What are your thoughts on Nintendo Today blocking screen recording and captures? Do you think the app should allow users to archive and share what they’re seeing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below, and keep your eyes on GameLuster for more breaking news in the build-up to the Switch 2!
