Octopath Traveler 2, the latest game in Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler series of “HD-2D” games, has officially shipped one million units, according to an update shared on Twitter. The game, which chronicles the journeys of eight protagonists across the land of Solistia, released on February 24, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The one million sales is between all platforms; a breakdown by platform was not provided.
This milestone was reached just over 100 days after launch. This marks somewhat of a decline in sales compared to the original Octopath Traveler, which sold one million units less than a month after releasing. Fans of the series had several theories about why this was the case. Some cited the original Octopath Traveler’s novel appearance as the first of the “HD-2D” games, which feature a blend of 3D background and 2D pixel sprites. Now, following the release of several other HD-2D titles, including Triangle Strategy and the remake of Live A Live, Octopath Traveler 2 may not have stood out as much.

Others suggested that the lower sales might be due to Octopath Traveler 2 not being included in Nintendo’s Voucher program, which allows customers to buy vouchers and then redeem them for digital Nintendo Switch games. Another theory put forward was the sheer number of RPGs released by publisher Square Enix in a short period of time. Since Summer 2022, Square Enix has released over a dozen RPG titles, including the Switch port of NieR: Automata, multiple titles in the Voice of Cards series, Crisis Core Reunion, and more. Another major release for Square Enix, Final Fantasy XVI, is also shortly forthcoming.
However, Octopath Traveler 2 received generally high scores from critics. It was praised for improving on the first game in a number of ways, including smoother combat, more connected stories, and fine-tuned class abilities. Hopefully, the game’s sales will continue to increase; its predecessor Octopath Traveler has currently sold more than three million copies worldwide, and many fans hope that the second game will do the same.
