Resident Evil 4 seems to have people rushing to buy Capcom stock at a high price, as the new remake has triggered a surge in the Japanese publisher’s share price.
Taking to Twitter, Dr Serkan Toto, the head of Japanese game consultancy Kantan Games, noted that the Mega Man maker’s share price on the Tokyo Stock Exchange had soared to ¥4,865 ($36.61) by midday on Monday, April 3, an all-time high for the stock. It is now sitting at a slightly lower price of ¥4,755 ($35.78) at the time of writing.
This surge is due in part to the successful launch of Resident Evil 4 on Mar. 24, 2023. The remake of Shinji Mikami’s landmark 2005 title has been met with almost universal critical acclaim and is currently sitting at 92% on game review aggregator site Open Critic, and 93% on Metacritic – making it one of the highest-rated games on any platform released so far this year.
Capcom has also reported that Resident Evil 4 surpassed 3 million units sold (topping the Famitsu sales charts in Japan) after being out for just two days.

In a statement to investors, the company attributed the game’s success to a combination of “securing high scores on online review sites” and “praise and attention following the release of the Chainsaw Demo”
Capcom also confirmed that the Resident Evil series has sold more than 135 million units since its launch more than 27 years ago, and regards it as one of its flagship franchises.
Capcom additionally shared that a free Mercenaries mode DLC is headed to the game in April, as well as a VR mode, for use with Sony’s recently released PSVR2 helmet, which is also in the works, although a specific release date has yet to be set.
